Home Office Snapshot — Chuck Newton

Chuck Newton provided me with snapshots of his new home office in his new home.

Chuck describes his office as pretty small. It is 8′X12′, “but laid out pretty well.” Jane his wife and law partner also shares the small but very efficient space. And you will notice from the shots that neither of them have an ego wall. Instead they hang art work.

Not only is the office wired for everything. They also wired the house and have wireless connections too. That way they can both work anywhere in the home and can go to the office to dock their laptops if the need arises.

And missing from Chuck’s office is that mess of wires under his desk you saw in mine. A project I will be working on soon. Additional, what is missing? Piles of papers and files. You see Chuck and his wife operate their office as paperless.

Just click on the thumbnail below and the photo will enlarge. Thanks Chuck for a great set of photos.

OK, OK. I will send you pictures of my home office…as soon as I ‘clean’ it up and make it picture-worthy!

You had better get those photos to me ASAP. We all want to see pictures of your command center too.

Unfortunately my office is not paperless, but it is close. It is, in Grant’s parlance, paper-LESS. In the move I got rid of the small copy machine because it was just too tempting to make a copy of something instead of scanning it and keeping it on Basecamp or the computer. I still get a good number of bills and regular mail that sits around until I can put it in the recycling bin. If I go to Court I most often will print off and take key documents with me. But, I am trying my best to break old habits and go without paper. This is true for all of the right reasons like conservation, the environment, etc. Paper is, however, mainly restrictive. It is hard to do your work were you are if you are relying on paper. You need to be relying on PDFs, your notebook or PDA, and keep copies of vital docs in a central locations accessible for broadband. For me this is Basecamp, although someone recently told me about Wrike, which claims to do a better job with storing email. I am probably going to test this out.

Okay, how fair is this. Grant and I drop our pants first and show you pictures of our offices and Susan believes she is better than us and cannot show us the unvarnished truth of what her office is like. Just push the clutter aside and take a picture already!!

    Chuck — I agree completely.
