As Home Office Warriors we are not always working in the home office. In fact, there are times we venture out to coffee shops, conferences or client meetings. And, when we leave the office, we tend to take the office with us. At least I do. I get a lot of questions from readers of the Home Office Warrior either by email or comments. I also talk a lot to people all over the U.S. about working from a home office. And, one question that keeps popping up is, what do you carry in your computer when you leave the office.
First of all is the bag. I have tried more computer/messenger bags than I care to admit. Just the other day, my wife came down to my office and was commenting on all the bags I have sitting in the corner. I told her it was a guy-tech-geekie thing. She didn’t buy it.
I am now using and absolutely love the Booq Folee 11 bag. However, the one I am using is not available any longer and I bought it cheap a few months ago. But, to be honest, I would pay what they are asking for it now as I think it is really the best bag out there. It is very durable and it protects my computer better than any other bag I have used. It has a ton of pockets too. Three words best describe my feelings for this bag, I love it.
Of course, what would a computer bag without the computer. I am sure it is quite clear by now that I use Apple products in my home office. My computer of choice is the MacBook. I use the 13-inch Black 2.2 GHz with the 120 gig hard drive which is actually faster than the bigger one. I upgraded to 2 gig of RAM and I would suggest everyone do the same. The MacBook is sturdy and very reliable.
To protect my Macbook’s screen while it travels in it bag, I use Radtech Screen Savrz. Well worth the small price and a smart investment too. I really don’t care what laptop you use. Carrying one in a bag. Throwing the bag in your car or other form of transportation can cause the keyboard and screen to come into contact. This product saves your screen from any damage from traveling.
I also carry with me a LaCie Mobile Hard Drive. On it I carry all the client files and other documents and folders I use on a daily basis. Why, I am a freak about backing up and having a backup with me. Storage is so cheap now, there is really no reason to have a back up of all your important files in your computer bag with you.
Just in case I need to jot down some notes about an idea that comes to me, I carry a Moleskine pocket ruled notebook. You just never know when some great idea comes to you and you don’t have your laptop open. I use the Moleskine for making those important notes in.
I know this one may seem really silly. Again, I tell my wife it is a guy thing. But, I have a favorite pen and I don’t care if it is weird or not. I love the Paper Mate LIquid Expresso Pens. I carry a supply of them in my bag as well as in one of the pockets in my Scottevest Fleece 4.0 Jacket. Which by the way has become an essential part of my “road warrior” arsenal.
Besides the other essentials such as spare batteries for my Wireless Mighty Mouse. I do carry one other handy tool and that is the Leatherman Micra. Only problem, don’t try to carry this onto a plane. I forgot about it last December and had to get a new one. Bummer.
Well that is pretty much it. With the exception of my iPhone and my Jawbone bluetooth headset, I travel pretty light. One of the advantage of having a paperless office.
I would encourage you to leave comments with what you carry in your bags. If you want, take a picture of the bag and all the contents laid out around it and I will run a few more post highlighting what other “Road Warriors” have in their bags.

I carry my lovely MacBook Pro in an illfitting bag which offers it the bare minimum of protection (shall rectify this soon, honestly). I also take at least one of my children’s notebooks which I have stolen because I can never find one of mine - I make sure when I buy them notebooks that they would look good in a meeting too. I usually include a pencil as well as some of those pens with nice soft tips whose names I don’t know. Also always take a good book and or a magazine because public transport in the UK is not what it was in my father’s day. That’s it. I would take a photo of my bag but it would only make you cry.
I enjoy very much your postings and have learned quite a bit. But, your infatuation, IMHO, with Apple products is, to me, misplaced. I find Apple to be overrated and overpriced. IMHO.
Great setup. Very portable. How do you keep your client files on the portable hard drive safe? (In the event it is lost or stolen.) Any suggestions? I want to make sure that my setup will pass ethical muster. Thanks a lot.
Michael, I have to disagree. Why would Apple products be overpriced and overrated? When you consider the fact the Mac computer works right out of the box. Does not require a virus program and I have never had one crash. In fact, getting back to the virus program, I don’t even have one on my computers. I spend no money on IT and best of all, they just work. I can do anything on my Mac you can do on your windows machine. I would be curious why you feel the way you do. Have you ever used a Mac in your business?
Jeremy — You can password protect your external hard drive. The problem is anything safe. If you work in a downtown office, have file cabinets and a window, all someone would need is a crowbar. Seriously. we can only do so much to protect. For computer based data storage, password protection is the best I have found.
